What is the Suffolk & Norfolk Secondary SCITT Tuition PGCE?
Our programme is a school centred teacher training course which awards successful trainees with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with 60 Masters credits.
We have been training teachers across Suffolk and Norfolk for just over twenty years so we have lots of experience in what it takes to train secondary school teachers who stay in the profession.
Our employment rate for our successful trainees is between 90-100% in local secondary schools.
Our trainees also gain jobs in other areas of the country if they relocate at the end of their training year.
The programme is structured so that your teaching commitments gradually increase throughout the year. As your confidence increases, so does your teaching timetable. You are not employed by the school which gives you the flexibility to undertake your training at a personalised pace to suit your needs.
You do not have sole responsibility for any classes so you are always working alongside an experienced teacher in the classroom.
What can we offer you as a trainee on the Suffolk and Norfolk SCITT Secondary Tuition programme?
As a trainee on this programme, you will be trained by tutors from the Suffolk and Norfolk SCITT programme and also by your mentors who will be working alongside you in the classroom. As this programme is a school centred teacher training programme, you will be in school on the first day of term in September but you will have attended induction sessions at the end of August too.
You are not expected to teach from the start of September so you will have the opportunity to observe lessons; build working relationships with students and staff and start to recognise what high quality teaching and learning looks like.
This school based approach is supported by two SCITT Tutors who will have weekly contact with you and visit you in school every two to three weeks during the first term leading up to December and across the other two terms as well. You will not be in school all the time as you will have the opportunity to attend Core Training sessions which will be conducted out of your placement school.
These Core Training sessions are so you can learn about a range of topics such as behaviour for learning; teaching students with special educational needs; how to assess students’ progress and learning about successful strategies to use in the classroom.
In addition to the Core Training sessions, you will receive at least six subject knowledge sessions which are delivered by a range of high quality practising teachers across a number of schools who will help you to build up the skills and knowledge you will need to specifically teach your subject in any future school.
You will also have two placements during your training year. Your first placement will be from September to December and then your second placement will be from January to Easter. From Easter to the end of June, you will return to your first placement school. We have over sixty partnership schools across Suffolk and Norfolk.
We will endeavour to place you within 30-40 minutes travelling distance of your home address and will take into account issues regarding childcare etc. We feel that this two placement structure provides you with an in-depth understanding of the different contexts of schools and prepares you for teaching in a future school of your choice.
If you are made an offer by us then you will also have a school placement interview as this is a really strong part of our school centred teacher training programme. It means that your placement school is fully committed to providing you with a high quality placement and it provides you with the opportunity to see the school and meet teachers in your potential placement school too.
We take an evidence informed approach to our teacher training programme and you will be given books to support your learning which are written by educational authors such as Tom Sherrington and Tom Bennett. We are also in partnership with our two local research schools, Unity Research School in Suffolk and Notre Dame Research School in Norfolk. These two research schools have an integral part in the Core Training programme we offer.
To support you in your learning, we will also provide you with a laptop and visualiser for the duration of your training programme.
We value the importance of you building networks with each other and in the profession so during your training year, we will ensure that in various ways, you have the opportunity to interact and engage with a number of trainees and educational speakers during your training year. For example in 2019-2020, we held a conference led by speakers such as Professor John West Burnham, Nat Damon from Reach Academics and Terence Higgins Trust .
How do you obtain your Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)?
We are in partnership with the University of Suffolk and the university validates and monitors our PGCE programme and has done so for over six years. The PGCE elements of the programme are integral to the existing Core Training sessions and there is no extra cost.
You will be expected to complete three assignments to gain your PGCE and 60 Master credits during your training year. We will fully support you in writing your Masters’ levels assignments. The assignments take a practitioner approach towards your learning at Masters’ level. You will be asked to write assignments which are based on your classroom practice and encourage you to engage with small scale practitioner based research.
You will be enrolled as a student with the University of Suffolk so will have access to their full range of library resources and other student support services.
The University of Suffolk has created a Masters course in Education Studies which you can complete at a later stage in your teaching career as the 60 Masters’ credits you gain on our programme count towards the 180 credits which are needed for a full Masters’ degree.

We also encourage all of our trainees to become members of the Chartered College of Teaching which is the professional body for teachers.
Membership to the Chartered College of Teaching is free for trainee teachers and is highly recommended as it will support you in your journey to become an evidence informed teacher.
